-
Minimize unnecessary hosing of wood surfaces. Whether the water is standing or in the form of rain water, over time excessive moisture will leech the natural protective oils and chemicals from the wood. Thus any future treatments will be resistant and not provide the beautiful results you would see under normal circumstances. Other issues resulting from excessive water include mildew, fungi, rot and susceptibility for termite infestation. Routine oiling will help the wood to resist water damage.
-
Be sure to elevate containers such as planters that touch the wood's surface so to keep moisture from accumulating underneath the planter. This will soon bring discoloring to the wood.
-
Be sure to minimize plant growth in which the vines "train" from the wood. This will allow a thorough drying when the wood does get wet. Thus you will prevent a decaying process referred to as "wet rot". Wet Rot becomes apparent when the wood is being exposed to excessive moisture on an ongoing basis and begins to break down the wood fibers. Typically this occurs where wood posts meet the ground. If you do have vines and plants draped over a wood structure, make sure you have it built to support the additional weight and apply a good protective coating before the plants cover it.
-
To protect your fencing, home and other wood architecture from infestation of termites and other wood consuming insects be sure not to pile wood near these structures where these pests may make a meal out of your investment. Dead leaves are also an attractive site for termites. Make sure and keep your yard well maintained throughout the year.
-
Be sure to keep hinges and latches well adjusted and tightened. Proper maintenance will extend the life and beauty of your fences and gates.
-
The weather can have a heavy toll on your fences, decks and arbors. Make sure to keep a regular treatment of staining and protective coating that ensure the luster and natural beauty of your wood year after year. Linseed oil is an agent which acts much like lotion on your hands and skin. This will moisturize the wood and prevent discoloring. Of course, you can always rely on our experts at Brothers Fence & Decking for all your staining and wood preservation needs.
-
A thorough cleaning at least twice a year will not only remove accumulated dirt, oil, mildew, etc. but also keep your wood beautiful year after year.
